According to foreign media reports, in 2022, the e-commerce transaction volume in Spain exceeded 72 billion euros, a year-on-year increase of 25%. According to the latest data provided by the National Market and Competition Commission (CNMC) of Spain, in the fourth quarter of last year alone, e-commerce increased by 16.2%, reaching 19.65 billion euros.
By industry, the industries with the highest turnover in the last three months of 2022 were travel agencies and tour operators, accounting for 7% of the total turnover, followed by clothing, accounting for 6.9%, and air transportation, accounting for 5%. In terms of transaction volume, the transaction volume in the last quarter of 2022 exceeded 375 million, a year-on-year increase of 12.4%. Among them, the gambling industry ranked first with 7.4% of the transaction volume. In terms of geographical breakdown, 41.9% of the revenue in the fourth quarter of 2022 came from Spain. The remaining 58.1% comes from Spanish and foreign purchases.
The industries with the highest foreign trade volume in Spain are clothing (9.9%), financial intermediary services (6.3%) and gambling (5.5%).
According to the data released by CNMC, the trade volume between Spain and foreign countries was 2.036 billion euros, an increase of 30.9% compared with the same period in 2021. 59.9% of foreign purchases come from the EU. The data emphasizes the activities related to the tourism industry (including travel agencies, air transport, land transport, car rental and hotels), accounting for 55.9% of Spain’s overseas purchases.
As for the domestic e-commerce revenue in Spain, the data shows that it increased by 18.9% compared with the same period in 2021, reaching 6.19 billion euros. Spain’s domestic income mainly comes from public administration, taxation and social security (9.5%).
